Knowledge Sharing : Understanding the "Do's and Don'ts" in South Korean Culture
2024-10-11Jakarta, October 2024 – PT Networks Indonesia Aku recently held a Knowledge Sharing session focusing on the "Do’s and Don’ts" of South Korean etiquette. The event aimed to enhance participants' understanding of social and business norms, crucial for fostering professional relationships and ensuring successful interactions in South Korea. This session was particularly valuable for those involved in international business, offering insights into key cultural aspects essential in formal settings.
One of the main points discussed was the importance of bowing as a sign of respect in South Korean culture. Participants learned that a 30 to 45-degree bow is commonly used as a polite greeting, while a deeper 90-degree bow is reserved for showing high respect. Additionally, it was emphasized that handshakes should be initiated by the senior person and performed with both hands to convey politeness.
The session also stressed the significance of punctuality in business meetings. Invitations for meetings should be sent three to four weeks in advance, with consideration given to South Korean national holidays to avoid scheduling conflicts. Another critical point was the importance of business cards, which should be exchanged using both hands as a sign of mutual respect. Politeness in body language, such as avoiding excessive gestures and avoiding direct eye contact with seniors, was also highlighted.
Dining etiquette was covered as well, with participants advised to follow the host's lead. From ordering dishes of similar value to waiting for seniors to start eating, attendees were reminded of the subtle yet important rules that govern South Korean dining behavior.
The event wrapped up with a Q&A session where participants explored essential Korean phrases useful in business interactions. This segment helped attendees better understand the language and customs, further supporting their ability to navigate cross-cultural exchanges effectively as PT Networks Indonesia Aku expands its international cooperation efforts.
The next Knowledge Sharing session, hosted by PT Networks Indonesia Aku, will be held on October 25th, 2024.
